"What is our plan? Are we to climb the wall? Or walk along it to try to find a gate?" Rowan asked.

"A gate may be hours away, and we do not know which direction to try. Also, gates mean guards. It will be far safer and quicker to climb," said Zeel firmly.

Allun shook his head. "It will not be safer or quicker for Perlain—or for Rowan."

"Or for you, Allun the baker, I have no doubt," said Zeel, grinning, taking her revenge for the way Allun had teased her during the long night. "But you have done your part. You brought us through the Wastelands with your clowning. Now it is my turn to— what did you say?—practice my art.' I will climb the wall, find a place to fasten the rope, and pull you up after me, one by one. But it must be done in darkness."

They hurried forward, almost running in their haste, but soon they had to slow again. They had left the clay behind completely and reached the solid rock on which the city was built. There they found themselves wading through a thick layer of sticks and stones that threatened to trip them at every step. The lumpies, too, were so many that it was almost impossible to walk between them or to see the way ahead.

There are thousands of them, thought Rowan, stopping for a moment. They could overwhelm us if they chose.
